The Perfect Beach Packing Checklist (Yes, Your Mum Was Right About Everything)
There's a speech every Australian has heard:
"Sunscreen. Hat. Water bottle. A proper towel, not that tiny one. Have you got shade? You need shade. No, a cap doesn't count as shade. And don't forget a bag you can actually carry."
Your mum gave this speech. Her mum gave this speech. She was right about all of it. We've spent years on Australian beaches burning in places we forgot to sunscreen and watching umbrellas cartwheel down the sand - and the checklist she handed you at age seven is basically correct.
We've just updated it slightly. She didn't know about Turkish towels. And she definitely didn't have a Sol Umbra.
The Non-Negotiables (Mum's Original List)
- ✅ Sunscreen SPF 50+ - Australian sun is not playing around. Reapply every two hours. Yes, even if it's cloudy. You burn.
- ✅ Hat with a proper brim - A cap protects your face. A wide-brim hat protects your face, neck, ears and the back of your head. Guess which one your mum meant.
- ✅ Water - At least one litre per person. Two if you have kids.
- ✅ Snacks - Hungry beach = everyone wants to leave. Fed beach = everyone wants to stay.
The Towel Situation - This Is Where Things Get Interesting
Here's something your mum didn't specify: which towel.
There is a towel spectrum, and most people are living at the wrong end of it. On one end: the giant fluffy bath towel that weighs the same as a golden retriever and is still damp three days later. On the other: the tragic little hand towel that covers roughly 40% of an adult human body.
The correct answer is a Turkish towel.
- ✅ Lightweight - fits in a bag, not a suitcase
- ✅ Quick-drying - dry within an hour in Australian heat
- ✅ Oversized - 193 × 178cm, enough room for an actual adult
- ✅ Looks great - because your beach towel has somehow become part of your personality
The Sol Umbra Turkish Towel comes in four colours (Light Lavender, Morning Surf, Coral Dune, Stormy Bay). Herringbone weave, fringed edges, dries fast enough that it won't make your bag smell like a wet dog on the drive home.
Mum said "bring a towel." She meant bring this towel.

The Shade Conversation (The One Your Mum Was Most Right About)
Let's talk about shade. Specifically, the part where your mum said "you need proper shade" and you said "I'll be fine" and then you were not fine.
"But I'll just sit under my umbrella," you say.
Ah yes. The umbrella. Which is currently doing a cartwheel down the beach because a coastal gust hit it sideways. The umbrella that required a degree in engineering to assemble. The umbrella whose spike is now somewhere near the water. The umbrella.
Here's what actually works:
- ✅ UPF 50+ fabric - rated protection, not just shade. Blocks 98%+ of UV radiation.
- ✅ Sandbag anchoring - uses the weight of the sand. No fighting soft sand with pegs.
- ✅ Sets up in 90 seconds - alone, without a YouTube tutorial.
The Sol Umbra Sun Shade is 160 × 160 × 210cm, weighs 1.2kg, and packs into a carry bag. It's what we built because we couldn't find one that actually worked.
"You need proper shade." - Every Australian mum, ever. She was right. She's always right.
The Bag Problem
You've got everything. Now where does it go?
The bag is the thing people underestimate every time. Somewhere around the 200-metre mark from the car park, you start making decisions about what to leave behind. This is how people end up at the beach without sunscreen.
- ✅ Large enough for towel, sunscreen, snacks and water
- ✅ Easy to carry over one shoulder
- ✅ Machine washable - everything that goes to the beach comes back with sand
The Sol Umbra Terry Towelling Beach Bag has an internal valuables pocket, canvas lining, and is machine washable. None of the rest of the checklist matters much if you've got nowhere to put it.
The Full Checklist - 2026 Edition

The Essentials
- ✅ Sunscreen SPF 50+ (and actually reapply it)
- ✅ Wide-brim hat - Sol Umbra Bucket Hat if you want it to look good
- ✅ Water - more than you think
- ✅ Snacks - more than you think
The Comfort Layer
- ✅ Turkish towel - oversized, quick-dry, doesn't smell on the drive home
- ✅ Sun shade with UPF 50+ - one that won't take off in the wind
- ✅ Change of clothes - you will be wetter than expected
- ✅ Zip-lock bags - for wet things, sandy things, phone-near-water situations
The "You'll Thank Yourself Later" Items
- ✅ Beach bag big enough to fit everything
- ✅ Spare sunscreen - someone always forgets theirs and asks to borrow yours
If you want to tick off shade, towel, hat and bag in one go - the Sol Umbra range covers all of it. Your mum would approve. She'd probably also say you should have bought it sooner.
